SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT // nora chipaumire & Wouter Vanhaelemeesch

In February 2019, Ghent will welcome a new festival: Same Same But Different, an international festival focusing on the universal issues of colonization and decolonization, identity, and geopolitical economics. The festival will open with African choreographer nora chipaumire. Her triptych “#PUNK 100% POP *N!GGA” — a performance featuring dance, song, beats, and spoken word — was inspired by her youth in Zimbabwe and the punk and new wave rebellion of the 1980s. The program also features a lot of music: Dur Dur Band, a huge success in Somalia in the 1980s with their East African funk, was forced to end their musical career in 1991 after a civil war broke out in the country. In 2019, the collective is revitalizing its live music and will perform for the first time in Belgium on March 1st at the Vooruit Balzaal. nora chipaumire & Wouter Vanhaelemeesch, music programmers at Vooruit, tell us about their festival plans.
