“nora chipaumire’s #PUNK 100% POP *N!GGA traverses three decades of musical influences and the artist’s coming-of-age in Zimbabwe, utilizing live music, movement, and a shifting installation as its vehicles. To each 50-minute third of the triptych chipaumire assigns an icon and music genre: Patti Smith and punk rock to #PUNK, verbalized as hashtag punk; Grace Jones and pop music to 100% POP; and Congolese rumba artist Rit Nzele to *N!GGA, verbalized as star nigga. Described as a live performance album, the work unfolds much like an improvisational jam session, with a sense of both spontaneity and intimacy, and taking place among the audience. Between sections, the audience is ushered out and then back into the theater, the moving installation of towering, wooden speakers rotated, repositioned, and activated.” Justin Allen
