nora chipaumire – ‘The body is not mute’
For the 2026 Infinities Commission, artist nora chipaumire presents gadzi, a sculptural installation that draws on the legends, stones and soil of her native country, Zimbabwe. In the artist’s own words, ‘gadzi is the oldest female being and a creative force tied to the legends of Shona people. She is connected to sacred places in our country… a manifestation of everlasting and haunting resilience beyond colonial concepts.’ In June 2026, chipaumire expanded gadzi into Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall for a series of electrifying performances with her long-term ‘corroborators’. The performances incorporated chipaumire’s iconic sound-system, ‘a mountain of speaking wood’, broadcasting the deep bass of dub music alongside saxophone, guitar and Zimbabwean mbira.
